Gypsy King Opens at Village Theatre – Even Your Husband Will Like This One!

Posted by Kathleen Cragun 1 Comment »

Have you wanted to take in a night at Village Theatre but your husband wouldn’t go with you?  Well, go alone if you must or take a friend but warn hubby, he will be sorry if he doesn’t see this one.

The Gypsy King Synopsis The Gypsy King. Leo and Frederick are a father-son acting duo whose unfortunate run-in with the royal guard causes quite the royal ruckus. Bearing a curious resemblance to the arrogant Prince Alfonse, Frederick finds himself in a dangerous position. Laugh riotously as you follow his adventures into the middle of an assassination plot that takes him through a maze of castle doors, to the bottom of a moat, and beyond. With a classic vaudeville feel, this new musical romp will cause quite a stir with its fast-paced comedic action. The plot is hysterical, the costumes creatively absurd and wonderful, music and song delightful. And I couldn’t stop laughing!

I think I will have to go again, just to hear Maria explain how things got so mixed up. What was that, now???

From One Grandma to Another!

Posted by Kathleen Cragun No Comments »

I received this in an email from a friend, it may be going around but I thought it was funny. My favorite is #3!  I don’t know who the author is.

There lots of grandmas these days who don’t look old, like these above.

The things grandkids say:

1. She was in the bathroom putting on her makeup under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter as she’d done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, “Gramma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!” I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye…

2. My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him 62. My
grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, “Did you start at 1?”

3. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. She heard the children getting more and more rambunctious and her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three year old say with a trembling voice, “Who was THAT?”

4. A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: “We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire that hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods.” The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in.    At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!”

5. My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, “Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?” I mentally polished my halo and I said, “No, how are we alike?” “You’re both old,” he replied.

6. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather’ s word processor. She told him she was writing a story. “What’s it about?” he asked. “I don’t know,” she replied. “I can’t read.”

7. I didn’t know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last she headed for the door saying, “Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these, yourself!”

8. When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, “It’s no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights. ”

9. When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, “I’m not sure..” “Look in your underwear, Grandpa,” he advised, “mine says I’m 4 to 6.”

10. A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, “Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today.” The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. “That’s interesting, ” she said, “how do you make babies?” “It’s simple,” replied the girl. “You just change ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add ‘es’.”

11. Children’s Logic: “Give me a sentence about a public servant,” said a teacher. The small boy wrote: “The fireman came down the ladder pregnant.” The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. “Do you know what pregnant means?” she asked. “Sure,” said the young boy confidently. ‘It means carrying a child.”

12. A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back,” said one child. “No,” said another. “He’s just for good luck.” A third child brought the argument to a close. “They use the dogs,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrants.”

13. A 6-year-old was asked where his grandma lived. “Oh,” he said, “she lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go get her. Then, when we’re done having her visit, we take her back to the airport.”

14. Grandpa is the smartest man on earth! He teaches me good things, but I don’t get to see him enough to get as smart as him!

15. My Grandparents are funny, when they bend over you hear gas leaks, and they blame their dog.

Have You Tried The Newport Trail Yet?

Pretty fancy. This trail extends from Highway 900 to Lakemont Bivd. It is  wide & paved and is lighted. A particularly nice trip with the autumn leaves in full color. The leaves are going fast, in fact some are already gone. Not gone exactly, just covering up the trail in our picture.

Have you tried it? If so let us know what you think. Write a comment on this article.

Tigers at Cougar Mountain Zoo Get New Habitat

Posted by Kathleen Cragun No Comments »

Saturday was a BIG day at Cougar Mountain Zoo in Issaquah, WA 98027. Taj and Almos are getting really big now. A new habitat was planned for them a long time ago. After the long wait Saturday was the day.

A special event was planned, the zoo closed early and then reopened again at 3:30 for those invited to participate in Taj and Almos entrance into their new home.

BUT those great BIG tigers (over 400 pounds) were BIG SCAREDY CATS.They wouldn’t go in!  In spite of many weeks of attempting and tempting them to go in, they would not! Not even as they watched from below all of us tasty morsels walking around their new home. Robyn Barfoot resorted to Plan B,so as not to disappoint the tigers fans. The NEW tiger cubs, Vitez and Bagheera were bought in and were more than happy to show everybody that they had no fear. Vitez and Bagheera are Bengal tigers, like Almos and Taj, but Bagheera is an Orange and Black Bengal and Taj is a Golden Bengal. Both Almos and Vitez are Royal White Bengals.

It is a treat to be able to have the bigger 2 year old tigers and the new little tigers at the same time. It is a very joyful re-run.

We were allowed to go into the new Tiger home, not just look at it from behind the fences (before any tigers were brought in). How often do you get the chance to do that? A Tiger Pool is spacious and deep with enough water for underwater viewing when the tigers get acclimated to the pool as well as their new home. Tigers love water.

Cupcakes and water were served the guests and each got a stuffed tiger. A silent auction was part of the event, encounters with many different animals being auctioned off. Tiger T shirts and Tiger Foot Prints were for sale.

A video of Taj and Almos’s new home.

When Vitez and Bagheera are grown, all the tigers will be together in the new habitat. Soon the new cubs will go into Taj and Almos’s old home. Zoo website http://www.cougarmountainzoo.org/

Vitez, Bagheera, Almos and Taj say, COME VISIT, We won’t eat you!

Cats, Dogs, Kids, Horses, Mud, Rain; How Was Your Weekend?

Posted by Kathleen Cragun 1 Comment »

Issaquah had a really nice Memorial day weekend. So, you expected a nice, sunny Labor Day weekend? If you headed for Bumbershoot, did you take your Bumbershoot? Or did you just stay home and look at the rain. My Labor Day weekend was..!? Well, a day of LABOR. I spent the weekend babysitting grandkids, AND dogs, cats, horses, cows, chickens, chinchillas, turtles…let’s see, was that all?  They all have to eat, you know! The kids are supposed to feed the animals, each child is assigned to certain ones. My inquiring about the successful completion of these chores was met with “that isn’t MY animal”.

Storm clouds arose fast, the winds came even faster, thunder and lightning frightened the dog. Tia, the dog had to come in the house. She is very BIG. It rained and rained and rained and rained and rained! We watched movies and played games and the kids tormented each other. I tried to escape but my truck wouldn’t start (see video).  We perused the garden for veggies to eat and found yummy corn on the cob.

How was your weekend??????

The Best Thing About Summer

Posted by Kathleen Cragun No Comments »

Special people you love that you don’t get to see everyday. That is what is the best thing about summer.

A Cougar or A Husky

A Cougar or A Husky?

We have family in places like Iowa, Idaho, Utah. Some are on the other side of Washington state. Some are fairly close around here. At gatherings we have all ages of people and have to serve favorite family foods, like our famous garlic bread, thanks Aunt Mary. And scones cooked over camp stoves at Crescent Bar, thanks Grandma Sweeney. This is not your Starbucks type of scones, but deep fried bread dough slathered with butter, jam, peanut butter, salt, honey, etc. not altogether of course (I hope not!)

There is jet sking, and swimming, games, and naps and lots of noisy chatter and laughter as we catch up and enjoy each others company. We have lots of little grandchildren who keep us entertained. Fun to see how big they are getting from year to year.

The above video is a short clip from a little guys 3 birthday party. A party, some pain (short) and decisions to be made. After all, will Dainen be a Cougar or a Husky? Tough decisions for a 3 year old!

A Few Scenes from Tastin’ n Racin’

Posted by Kathleen Cragun No Comments »

We announced on this blog the 13th year of Tastin’ n Racin’.  Just the week before we had temperatures in the high 80’s and low 90’s. What a difference a week makes in the Pacific NW! Cool weather and even a little rain fall came back along with the Hydros. We put off going out to Lake Sammamish State Park thinking the clouds would lift and the sun would shine. Didn’t happen! We decided to go anyway. We are glad we did. The parking lots were still crowded but not full, we found a place (that’s always nice).

We decided to show you what it was like rather than tell you. A picture is worth a thousand words, you know.

Show Boat in Ship Shape

Posted by Kathleen Cragun 1 Comment »

How do they DO that? A huge multi-level boat that moves and even splits apart to allow for other necessary scenes, so smoothly AND without noise! Village Theatre designs and builds all these elaborate sets themselves, no rentals here.

An Epic Broadway production is not too big a challenge for Village Theatre. I didn’t tell Larry he was going to a show that was 3 hours long, or he might not have gone. Never have 3 hours gone so fast. When the curtain came down I wasn’t ready for the end. I didn’t hear any complaints from Larry, either!

Dealing with some serious subject matter, amid singing, dancing, grand set designs and a plot that ran a gaumet of years could have been disjointed but it was not. All contributed to the telling of the tale. It was fast paced, fun, and at times hilarious.

Capn Andy (Larry Albert) If anyone stole the show it was Capn Andy

Cap'n Andy (Larry Albert) If anyone stole the show it was Cap'n Andy

Cap’n Andy was over the top when the show (on the boat) couldn’t continue because an uncouth mountain man tried to shoot the villain ending the scene. Cap’n went on stage an played all parts so the audience wouldn’t miss a thing. One of the most hilarious scenes I have ever witnessed.

Julie played by Cayman Ilika sings Bill.

Julie played by Cayman Ilika sings "Bill."

While all the cast voices were superb, Cayman Ilika has the voice of an angel. A main character, nonetheless, her time on stage was too short. Another favorite of mine was the Charleston Dance scene.

Village Theatre’s Production of Show Boat Begins

Posted by Kathleen Cragun No Comments »

Tommorow night, May 13th at Francis J. Gaudette Theatre, Show Boat opens. An amazingly major undertaking by Village Theatre of a musical that has not been seen in our area for over twenty years, Show Boat came from the novel of the same name, written by Edna Ferber in 1926. It has been done in many different versions on stage and adapted for film beginning with silent film, 1929,  and a major MGM Technicolor film version in 1951.

The plot developed from Edna’s interest and research into the floating theatres of the day and the story spans a period of 47 years. It begins aboard the show boat Cotton Blossom as it arrives at the river dock in Natchez, Mississippi and deals with romance, tragedy and how lives are affected over the years by personal issues and attitudes of the day. With all the wonderful songs you will recognize and enjoy, it is not a light comedy.

Edna Ferber, being Jewish and a woman author, dealt with discrimination herself and brings us face to face with racial prejudice issues in the plot.

Gaylord, a riverboat gambler & Magnolia, a starry eyed 18 year old and daughter of Capn Andy

Gaylord, a riverboat gambler & Magnolia, a starry-eyed 18 year old and daughter of Cap'n Andy. Do you think there is going to be trouble?

Joe, a worker on the boat, who Magnolia seeks advice from, sings Ol Man River as it appears Magnolia wont listen.

Joe, a worker on the boat, who Magnolia seeks advice from, sings Ol' Man River as it appears Magnolia won't listen to his counsel.

Magnolia tells Julie that shes in love!

Magnolia tells Julie that she's in love with Gaylord!

So how does Julie, a white woman konw how to sing Cant Help Lovin Dat Man? If you dont know, come and find out.

So how does Julie, a white woman know how to sing "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man"? If you don't know, come and find out. Even if you do, come to Show Boat, you won't be disapointed.

I have always been amazed at the Village Theatre productions. I can’t wait to see how they deal with a 6,000 pound riverboat.
