The Salmon Are Coming The Salmon Are Coming, To Issaquah

Posted by Larry Cragun No Comments »

Out in the Sound there is a meeting going on. The head Salmon is taking a vote, should we head east now is the question? The majority want to wait for rain. However, some of them are feeling tired and dreary and want to start the long trek to Issaquah now. When will they start? When will they arrive? I know the answer, they arrive in mass 30 days from now. Mark on your calender to take the weekend to Issaquah. Visit the hatchery, watch these big guys in the fish ladder. View them from the bridge. It is an amazing part of this great place we live.

On Your Way to Salmon Days in Issaquah

Posted by Larry Cragun No Comments »

If you can’t wait until you get to the Foods of the World at Salmon Days in Issaquah, here is your chance for a snack or perhaps on your way home if you still have any room left, maybe a root beer float at XXXRoot Beer. It’s a little like “Where’s Waldo?” in here. There really are some girls sitting at a table eating in one photo. See if you can find them.

BORN TO BE WILD Issaquah Salmon Days Festival OCT 7 & 8 10AM-6PM

Posted by beta No Comments »

Get ready, get set, GO! Don’t miss this exciting annual event. Issaquah Salmon Days is this weekend. And what an event it is. This event is brought to you by the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce. I am in awe of how hard they work for us. Salmon Days celebrate the return of the salmon to our lakes and streams where the cycle of life will begin again.

Grande Parade Saturday Oct 7 10 AM Front Street and Gilman Blvd to 12th Street: FLoats, Clowns, Bands, School Groups, Dance Teams and even 30 Harley riders leading off.

Then there are attractions of every kind:

Art and Craft Booths line the streets with their wares (more than 300)

Field of Fun- FREE - The kids love this. It is held on Memorial Field behind the Police Station and has Huge inflatables, an unusual trampoline, dancing, rock climbing, Monster mural, Fish printmaking, a Kids Carnival and Mini trains and more, more, more. At 2:00 Jeroen Mourik is bringing us his very popular Festival Spectacle. It will be Wild and Fun.

If that isn’t enough there are 4, yes 4 stages of live, free entertainment.

When you get hungry, and you will with all the tempting aromas around, there are Foods of the World in Depot Park (adjacent to the Field of Fun) I’ll bet you can’t just try one! Then don’t forget the Kiwanis Salmon Bake at Gibson Park on Newport Way. They start serving at 11:30AM

Last but not least, the inspiration for the festival, visit the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery. It first opened in 1936 and now is visited by over 300,000 thousands visitors annually (not counting the salmon). They have displays and exhibits, activities and helpful F.I.S.H. people to answer your questions. You can watch salmon of several kinds fight their way up the fish ladders and view them both in a natural stream and in the tanks with glass viewing windows.

How do I get there? Issaquah, Washington is off exit 17 or 18 off of I-90, but it gets crowded when the festival is going on. There are 3 shuttle stops where you may want to leave your car and take the shuttle to the festival.

Issaquah Park and Ride: Intersection of Newport Way and SR900 (SE corner only, NE corner underconstruction)

Costco Coporate parking lot: 10th Ave NW (opposite side of the freeway from Salmon Days Festival.)

Issaquah Highlands Park and Ride: between NE Park Drive and NE High Street (Also opposite side of freeway)

All parking is free. Shuttle is $1.00 roundtrip for adults; children 5 and under ride free.

Issaquah Salmon Hatchery - The Salmon are here!

Posted by Larry Cragun 1 Comment »

Cool, rainy weather is bringing in salmon in huge numbers. I stopped by the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery yesterday. The water was high and swift and the water murky but see if you can spot the salmon in the pictures I post.

Oops, That is not the real thing. I’ll try again.

There we go. This guy didn’t make it up the ladder with that jump. But he’ll keep trying and trying.

See all those sharklike fins on the lower left. No, not sharks, SALMON by the thousands are under there.

The Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery is a very “Offishial” organization. F.I.S.H. are those guides who provide you with answers to your questions when you visit the hatchery. They lead tours for school children and educate them about issues that affect salmon and their life cycle. They also help everyone understand the necessity of watershed stewardship. F.I.S.H. are always interested in people who want to learn and share to be volunteers. Their website info is on our home page on the right hand column.

Stay tune for more info. SALMON DAYS in Issaquah are Oct 7 & 8
