Tigers at Cougar Mountain Zoo Get New Habitat

Posted by Kathleen Cragun No Comments »

Saturday was a BIG day at Cougar Mountain Zoo in Issaquah, WA 98027. Taj and Almos are getting really big now. A new habitat was planned for them a long time ago. After the long wait Saturday was the day.

A special event was planned, the zoo closed early and then reopened again at 3:30 for those invited to participate in Taj and Almos entrance into their new home.

BUT those great BIG tigers (over 400 pounds) were BIG SCAREDY CATS.They wouldn’t go in!  In spite of many weeks of attempting and tempting them to go in, they would not! Not even as they watched from below all of us tasty morsels walking around their new home. Robyn Barfoot resorted to Plan B,so as not to disappoint the tigers fans. The NEW tiger cubs, Vitez and Bagheera were bought in and were more than happy to show everybody that they had no fear. Vitez and Bagheera are Bengal tigers, like Almos and Taj, but Bagheera is an Orange and Black Bengal and Taj is a Golden Bengal. Both Almos and Vitez are Royal White Bengals.

It is a treat to be able to have the bigger 2 year old tigers and the new little tigers at the same time. It is a very joyful re-run.

We were allowed to go into the new Tiger home, not just look at it from behind the fences (before any tigers were brought in). How often do you get the chance to do that? A Tiger Pool is spacious and deep with enough water for underwater viewing when the tigers get acclimated to the pool as well as their new home. Tigers love water.

Cupcakes and water were served the guests and each got a stuffed tiger. A silent auction was part of the event, encounters with many different animals being auctioned off. Tiger T shirts and Tiger Foot Prints were for sale.

A video of Taj and Almos’s new home.

When Vitez and Bagheera are grown, all the tigers will be together in the new habitat. Soon the new cubs will go into Taj and Almos’s old home. Zoo website http://www.cougarmountainzoo.org/

Vitez, Bagheera, Almos and Taj say, COME VISIT, We won’t eat you!

Cats, Dogs, Kids, Horses, Mud, Rain; How Was Your Weekend?

Posted by Kathleen Cragun 1 Comment »

Issaquah had a really nice Memorial day weekend. So, you expected a nice, sunny Labor Day weekend? If you headed for Bumbershoot, did you take your Bumbershoot? Or did you just stay home and look at the rain. My Labor Day weekend was..!? Well, a day of LABOR. I spent the weekend babysitting grandkids, AND dogs, cats, horses, cows, chickens, chinchillas, turtles…let’s see, was that all?  They all have to eat, you know! The kids are supposed to feed the animals, each child is assigned to certain ones. My inquiring about the successful completion of these chores was met with “that isn’t MY animal”.

Storm clouds arose fast, the winds came even faster, thunder and lightning frightened the dog. Tia, the dog had to come in the house. She is very BIG. It rained and rained and rained and rained and rained! We watched movies and played games and the kids tormented each other. I tried to escape but my truck wouldn’t start (see video).  We perused the garden for veggies to eat and found yummy corn on the cob.

How was your weekend??????

All in all it was a good Labor Day weekend, it was ……………..A LABOR OF LOVE!

This Rooster by Any Name Would Preen as Sweet!

Posted by Kathleen Cragun 3 Comments »

We have called this guy Nappie, short for Naples, since we first saw him a few years ago hanging out at Staples on Front Street in Issaquah. We love this little critter.  On July 17th of 2007 we did an article about him on this blog. If you would like to go to the story CLICK HERE. We have even made him our mascot on the brochure for Issaquah Undressed.com

He goes by the name of McNugget to many in Issaquah. He appears to have more lives than my cat, Portia, who has taunted death many times, like when she pee-ed on my bed! The Issaquah Press recently reported that McNugget/Nappie had a run in with a Pit Bull! Thankfully he survived again. Hunter Deiglmeier at the Press tells how this rooster has also escaped a coyote and a cougar. For Issaquah Press article CLICK HERE

Like the picture above shows, he loves his image, preening long and often in front of the shiny wheels in Staples parking lot. Sometimes he seems to be the Doorman for Staples. He is also very skilled at drinking from the tiniest pool of water in the parking lot. We have been told he is an escapee from The Grange Supply.

What ever his name (I think I like McNugget best) we are sooooooooooo glad he is still with us.

National Night Out in Issaquah

Posted by Kathleen Cragun No Comments »

Issaquah joined the nation in National Night Out, an event that encourages interaction and support between each community and the police, firemen and other public servants. In Issaquah that was an evening well spent.

Take a look at the events of the evening Tues Aug 4th 2009. Ever had a policeman fix you a hotdog? Cooked on a Pink Pig shaped BBQ? New experience for us.

Do You Play Fly Ball? You Dog You.

Posted by Larry Cragun No Comments »

We have a new friend, Laurie Carlisle. Actually, Laurie is a business friend, she is the super booker for the Hilton Garden Inn. She scours the web for opportunities to book them into this fine local hotel. Lori loves pets. So do we, but Laurie I must say introduced us to a game dogs play (with a little help from humans) called fly ball. Now you may be much more dog savvy than this cat owner couple, but fly ball is fascinating. Take a look at this video. I bet you watch it over and over and over. Just like those dogs hit the box over and over and over.

Click here for the short video.

Enjoy:

Laurie adds this: Another exciting event happening this Sunday at the 3 Dog Bakery in Seattle .  The Sheltie Meetup Group. There will be 20 Shelties there for food and fun and laughs and of course with their owners. I can take pics of that or come down. It is in Seattle at 5pm on Sunday.

PS: This is no April fools joke.
