A Tribute to Merlin the Magnificent Cougar

Posted by Kathleen Cragun

We were very sorry to here that Merlin, the wonderful cougar at the Cougar Mountain Zoo has died. He was a very large cat, and was a favorite of our family members when we took them to the zoo. Merlin had a long and good life at the zoo, after being abandoned by his mother at just a few weeks old. Merlin lived to be 16 years old. We will miss you Merlin.

Our sympathy is extended to all the zoo folks who have cared for him and loved him all those years. I know personally that they love their jobs and the animals they care for.

There is still a cougar at the zoo, Nashi. Go visit. Cougar Mountain Zoo will tell you many things you didn’t know about cougars (and all the other animals). We have said it before but this is a great zoo for small children and it doesn’t take all day to see it.

These photos were taken by Ashley Kyser of Irresistable Photography. (and our daughter!)

Merlin had such cute yoda ears! Thank you for the tribute. He is missed everyday but we were very fortunate to have known him. Merlin lived a good long life and he was a fantastic Cougar Ambassador :) Feel free to come by and share Merlin stories or say hi to Nashi and the other amazing animals here at the Cougar Mountain Zoo.
